On February the 3rd, Bertha Cáceres, Honduran human rights and environment  activist, Founder of the Consejo de Organizaciones Populares e Indigenas de Honduras (Copinh), has been murdered. She was shot dead by gunmen who entered her home in La Esperanza and circumstances of the killing are still unclear.

On October 27-29, 2014, Ms. Caceres participated in the First International Meeting of Popular Movements, organised by the Pontifical Council in the Vatican at the presence of Pope Francis. On that occasion, she spoke to His Holiness about all the struggle of the indigenous people for the affirmation of their rights in their homeland.

The Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace unites with her family and friends and send condolences through a message from our President, Cardinal Peter Turkson.
