Sr. Marjorie Keenan

On November 14, 2016, in Tarrytown, New York, Sr. Marjorie Keenan (sr. Gailhac) RSHM, died at the age of 87. She was a religious of the Sacred Heart of Mary.

Sr. Marjorie Keenan, RSHM,  was a passionate expert on issues related to environment, disarmament and peace.

Born in New York, after having received her doctorate from the Sorbonne in Paris, she remained in France to direct the Junior Year Abroad program of the Marymount College. Secretary General  of her religious congregation for 12 years, returned to the US where she became Secretary General of the World Conference on Religion and Peace/USA. In the same period, she served a valuable service at the Permanent Mission of the Holy See to the UN, in order to follow  disarmament issues.

Sr. Marjorie was appointed member of the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace by Pope Paul VI in 1977, until 1986 when she was asked to join as a permanent official in the same Council. Within the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace, she continued to work on peace and disarmament, and especially since 1990 - when the Message for the World Day of Peace was "Peace with God the Creator, Peace with all of Creation" - on environmental issues.

Two publications edited by Sr. Marjorie Keenan are still cornerstones of the Catholic Church on environment-related issues: From Stockolm to Johannesburg. A Historical Overview of the concern of the Holy See for the Environment (2002) and Care for Creation. Human Acrtivity and the Environment (2000) which is a collection of some of her lectures.

A discreet and careful person, Sr. Marjorie Keenan had created  friendly and long-lasting relationships with colleagues.

Those who have known her maintain a grateful memory and entrust her soul to the Lord.
