On Tuesday May 8, 2012, at the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace, in Rome, was held the First International Conference on Human Trafficking co-organized by this Department and the Catholic Bishops' Conference of England and Wales.
Cardinal Peter K.A. Turkson, President of the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace, opened the international conference: "In spite of the engagement of the international community and the efforts of part of civil society, this very sad phenomenon continues to victimize millions. It is one of the worst forms of human exploitation; it is no less than a contemporary form of slavery. "
The conference was attended by representatives of Lithuania, Nigeria, South Africa, United States and Europe, together to combat human trafficking and support those who consecrate their lives in the fight against the scourge of human trafficking.
